Iris From My Mother's Yard

Homeplace Iris, 6 x 13.5
June Rollins ©

Last week, when visiting my 89 year old mother in VA I gathered these heirloom iris from her yard. The season for the iris I grow in NC had ended and I was excited to have one more opportunity to paint from life.
One more opportunity to paint flowers from this yard...

The Rhinestone Brooch Mystery

One too many late night milkshakes made for a morning sleep-in. Up in time for coffee, 8am yoga, errands, breakfast, e-mail correspondence...

Finally, in the studio at 11am, continuing on this lovely bridal bouquet watercolor portrait commission that has been calling to me.

Especially the center rhinestone brooch.

Is this the something old, the something cherished?  I think so.
Such a compelling energy it has.
I paint in a yearning, mysterious place today.
Love this connection when it happens.

Are All Those Bug Bites Worth It?

Thats what I ask myself every summer when I spray on bug spray (that's never seemed to work), before going outside to water drooping flowers.

Remind me again, why is flower gardening fun?

But this day in early May, when I've just come back inside from hand-picking the bouquet shown below, I shout a resounding, "Yes!"

I need them as much as they need me on a hot, dry summer day.
I need their soul deep beauty. Without it, something in me withers.

I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.
-Claude Monet

Please, Hurry!

I Love Blueberries! So, I'm daily inspecting the three blueberry bushes my husband and I planted three years ago from White Flower Farm

Here's what I just discovered!

Last year they yielded about a cup and a half.
But, this year, they're showing off  :)

Guess I am too. Loving my new camera!
Thought this image worthy of a ©

Working on a summer fruit, card collection.
Soon, available at:

I Wasn't Supposed To Be Home Painting Today

I was scheduled to teach a workshop, but not enough people signed up to make the minimum. Not something most artists want to talk about. But it happens.

And what did I do?

I celebrated the unexpected gift of an artist retreat day.

More of today's progression photos of this bridal bouquet
commissioned portrait are on my Facebook Art Page.
